Internship Opportunities

Historic Huguenot Street is pleased to offer a number of internship opportunities every fall, spring, and summer semester, to all students beyond their freshman year of college. Internships are part-time, with the opportunity for college credits.

We are currently accepting applications for the Spring 2024 season!

Departments

 

Archives

Interns will report to and work with the Archivist/Librarian performing a variety of collections maintenance jobs. Responsibilities and projects may include cataloguing, inventorying, organizing, and maintaining archives, and entering data into the collections database. All interns will receive training in handling archives. Interns are, additionally, responsible for the completion of their own project(s) by the end of the internship period. 

Some computer and camera knowledge is preferred, but not required.

 
 

 
 

Curatorial & Collections

Interns will assist with the cataloguing, display, and research of the HHS Permanent Collection that includes a variety of antique furniture, textiles, household items, photographs, archival materials, and fine and decorative art.  Responsibilities include proper handling and care of museum objects; photography and scanning; research, writing, and interpretation; creating content for the Object of the Week blog; as well as planning exhibits and installing artifacts and archival materials. Interns are, additionally, responsible for the completion and presentation of their own individual project(s) by the end of the internship period. 

Candidates should have an interest in historic archives and collections. Prior knowledge and/or experience in cataloguing and handling historic objects is preferred. Basic computer skills are required.

 
 

 
 

Communications & Marketing

Interns will assist the Communications & Marketing Coordinator with a variety of tasks that include but are not limited to advertising, marketing, public relations, graphic design, and social media. Interns are, additionally, responsible for the completion and presentation of their own project(s) by the end of the internship period.

Candidates should be pursuing a degree in a related field; marketing, communications, digital media, etc. Communication and computer skills required. Graphic design skills, an interest in history, and/or experience working for a non-profit organization preferred. 

 
 

 
 

Grant Research

Interns will use their innovation and communication skills to assist Historic Huguenot Street’s Grant Writer in building opportunities for donors and grantmakers, as well as in designing creative fundraising projects to support the ongoing programs of the museum. The position will provide hands-on experience in nonprofit development and practical experience in museum management. Interns are, additionally, responsible for the completion and presentation of their own individual project(s) by the end of the internship period.

Candidates should be Junior/Senior level business students with strong verbal and written communication skills. Good organizational, interpersonal, and planning skills are required, in addition to ability to work on tight deadlines. Prior nonprofit experience is desired or a background in marketing, sales, public relations, and customer service. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential. Confidentiality of sensitive materials is expected. An average GPA of 3.7 or above is required. Communication and computer skills required. An interest in history and/or experience working for a non-profit organization preferred.

 
 

 
 

Programming & Education

Interns will assist the Tour & Interpretation Coordinator, Arts and Media Manager, and Education Coordinator with special events and other public programs, such as school groups, lecture events, tours, and more. Interns will also take part in the development and implementation of new programs for various audiences. Interns are, additionally, responsible for the completion and presentation of their own project(s) by the end of the internship period. 

Candidates should have an interest in history and education, and enjoy working with the public. Communication, computer skills, and creativity required.

Scholarship Funds

Historic Huguenot Street promotes outstanding research and scholarship among students in such topical areas as decorative arts, Indigenous history and culture, the African American experience in the Hudson Valley, and Huguenot history and culture.

The scholarships below are offered to eligible undergraduate and graduate students in collaboration with Historic Huguenot Street and the Hasbrouck Family Association. Awards will be applied to the 2024 Spring semester.

$5,000 GERTRUDE E. HASBROUCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (4 awards)

Applicants must be of documented New Paltz Huguenot descent

$1,000 DOROTHY DUBOIS WALKER BEACH SCHOLARSHIP (2 awards)

Applicants must:

  • be of documented Huguenot descent

  • be an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree at an academic institution in the United States

  • possess ideals that are exemplified in the HHS mission

$1,000 CHARLES J. HASBROUCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (1 award)

Applicants must be undergraduates studying:

  • historic preservation, architecture, the conservation of artifacts and manuscripts, and/or

  • the education of the public about local history in accordance with the mission of Historic Huguenot Street.

$1,000 KENNETH E. HASBROUCK, SR. HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP (1 award)

Applicants must be studying:

  • the impact of Huguenot immigrants or their descendants on American culture and/or language, or on the history of Ulster County, New York, during the period of 1600 to 1800, or

  • the conservation of artifacts and manuscripts, or

  • the education of the public about local history in accordance with the HHS mission.

$1,500 LUCILLE STOEPPLER BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (1 award)

Applicants must:

  • be majoring in history or anthropology, and

  • have an academic average above 3.5 for at least two years.

  3. Two (2) letters of recommendation – at least one from a college or university professor

  4. A statement of the applicant’s goals

  5. An official transcript that must be:

  • emailed directly to Historic Huguenot Street from the college or university, or

  • sent in an unopened, sealed, and marked envelope from the registrar or bursar’s office, or

  • remitted from the registrar or bursar’s office via an online portal.
