Historic Huguenot Street Broadens Criteria for
Two Scholarship Offerings
NEW PALTZ, NY (May 14, 2019) In accordance with its longstanding and ongoing commitment to academic achievement, Historic Huguenot Street is pleased to announce that it has broadened the eligibility criteria for two scholarship awards; The Kenneth E. Hasbrouck, Sr. and the Charles J. Hasbrouck Memorial Scholarships. In conjunction with the Attorney General of the State of New York, Historic Huguenot Street has modified some of the original restrictions imposed on these scholarship funds in an effort to enhance student eligibility.
The Kenneth E. Hasbrouck, Sr. Scholarship has been available every other year since 2001, and typically awards one $1,000 scholarship to a college student (either undergraduate or graduate) per cycle. Prior to the fund modifications, applicants of the Kenneth E. Hasbrouck, Sr. Scholarship were eligible only if they were studying the impact of Huguenot immigrants or their descendants on American culture or language, or on the history of Ulster County, NY during the period of 1600 to 1800. As of April 25th, 2019, applicants for the Kenneth E. Hasbrouck, Sr. Scholarship may also be studying the conservation of artifacts and manuscripts or the education of the public about local history (in accordance with HHS’s mission). Similarly, the Charles J. Hasbrouck Memorial Scholarship was originally established in 1988 and was eligible only to students who were obtaining a degree in historic preservation, art history, or architecture at Hamilton College, Columbia University, or the State University of New York at New Paltz. Now, applicants for the Charles J. Hasbrouck Memorial Scholarship may be studying historic preservation, architecture, the conservation of artifacts and manuscripts, and/or the education of the public about local history (in accordance with HHS’s mission) from any college or university within the United States.
Historic Huguenot Street hopes that many more students will be able to benefit from the broadened requirements for these two awards, and welcomes applications for all of the organization’s scholarships. About Historic Huguenot Street
A National Historic Landmark District, Historic Huguenot Street is a 501(c)3 non-profit that encompasses 30 buildings across 10 acres comprising the heart of the original 1678 New Paltz settlement, including seven stone houses dating to the early eighteenth century. Historic Huguenot Street was founded in 1894 as the Huguenot Patriotic, Historical, and Monumental Society to preserve the nationally acclaimed collection of stone houses. Since then, Historic Huguenot Street has grown into an innovative museum, chartered as an educational corporation by the University of the State of New York Department of Education that is dedicated to protecting our historic buildings, preserving an important collection of artifacts and manuscripts, and promoting the stories of the Huguenot Street families from the seventeenth century to today.
